Bloc Party: The party line on Bloc Party is that the first album, Silent Alarm, is essential, and that it’s rapidly downhill from there. I disagree vehemently. I disagree vehemently. I go to the unfairly maligned A Weekend In The City way more often; it slowed the pace a bit but found much more emotional heft. Another Weekend in the City is this fond memory, absolutely perfect for someone such as me to find over a year after the band broke up. The LP shows signs of songs all throughout Bloc Party 's career: the energy of Silent Alarm, the brooding of A Weekend in the City and the brand new angle of, the yet to be released, Intimacy.
It's now been eleven years since Bloc Party's debut 'Silent Alarm', yet the band and particularly vocalist Kele Okereke seem intent on rejuvenation by any means necessary. With a new rhythm section on board and a new-found focus on 'the spiritual meeting the sensual', their new effort is aeons away from the guitar-driven rage of their last 'Four' displaying a more mature sound closer to Kele's electronically driven solo work yet also with the vulnerability as on the tender standout 'Exes' and the stark and keening 'Different Drugs' by which these upstarts originally made their name. A bold step forward. But what's currently up in Banquet 2.0 is a fair amount of stuff for a Blochead to gorge away at currently (especially if you're not familiar with it all, some stuff has placeholder names). It will take a while for more stuff to come in, there's a lot I have to sort through so expect to wait a long while for the whole thing to be complete. So maybe start digging in right now would be okay since future updates will come in 'chunks'.
