Southwest in looking thru some old farm magazines, lots of ads about equipment powerd by a detroit, so, i guess my question is, why was detroit so popular in the 60s and 70s i hear about cummins and cat engines for a long time, but was detroit ahead of every body back then? Komik online romantis bahasa indonesia. Who all used them? Oliver, fox choppers, repower 5010 and 5020, thanks Posted 3/1/2013 15:55 (#2934987 - in reply to #2934948) Subject: Re: detroit diesel?
Sac & Story county IA They came along right at the start of WW2. Used in a ton of landing craft and military stuff. That engine had most of a 50 year run. I still have some but the Detroit 60 will do about 20% better on fuel.
The engine was 2 cycle. The intake was in the lower part of the sleeve. The airbox around the sleeve would accumulate condensed water, unburned fuel, engine oil - a bad mixture and drool it out on the ground. The world got so we don't seem to like puddles of oil on the ground anymore. So, they got to be out of favor. Posted 3/1/2013 16:01 (#2934995 - in reply to #2934948) Subject: Re: detroit diesel?
Hagen Brothers farms,Goodrich ND They were tough, powerful and reliable in most AG, construction and heavy truck applications, very simple and cheap to repair. If you heard a semi tractor or construction machine running during the 50's-60's, it had an 80% chance of making a 2 cycle Detriot diesel sound. I used a lot of them in AG and heavy truck stuff during the 60's-70's, So easy to configure for almost any application, Need the air intake pipe on a certain side and the exhaust the same or opposite, or need it to rotate CW or CCW, no problem as it fit together any way you wanted it. Parts were cheaper than many gas engines of the day. I remember a 71 series rod bearing pair being $2.50, a reman 71 series injector was $18 in the 70's. I farmed with them in sizes from 120 HP to 440 HP. Why they finally lost the battle aginst the constantly improving 4 cycle turbo diesels, they could not match the lugging power and fuel economy of the 4 cycle turbo motors, and in the end, could not meet Diesel emissions specs.

The 2 cycle Detriots were cheap. Tough, powerful and reliable from their introduction in 1936, so they had a head start on the really crude 4 cycle diesels of the 30's-50's Edited by Jon Hagen 3/1/2013 16:03 Posted 3/1/2013 16:01 (#2934998 - in reply to #2934948) Subject: Re: detroit diesel? That and NOTHING beats the ROAR of a Detroit!! Learned to drive truck on an old Paystar 5000 with a Detroit. Had to wear ear muffs just to keep my marbles intact, but what a sound. You could mount the clutch on either end of the crankshaft. The intake and exhaust manifolds could be mounted on the most convenient side of the engine and the direction of rotation could be changed. This made it nice for installing two engines in a boat and using one exhaust pipe. One engine would run clockwise and the other engine would run counter clockwise.
