Over the summer, System of a Down frontman Serj Tankian released a explaining why he and the rest of the band couldn't see eye-to-eye on how to move forward with a new album, the long-awaited follow-up to 2005's Mezmerize and Hypnotize. In the statement, Tankian said he wanted a potential new System album to have a 'concept or theme' so that it's a 'full experience' rather than 'just a record.' In a new interview with, Tankian expands upon what he meant. 'Music is music: You're ultimately going to release it and people are going to listen to it,' Tankian explains. 'But I thought it would be great if we created some type of event or set of events that stem out thematically from the music that can encapsulate whatever new record or sound we're propagating.' 'We'd not just release a record, but do something more grand around it,' he adds.

System of a Down, also known by the acronym SOAD and often shortened to System, is an Armenian American rock band from Southern California, formed in.

All the SOAD drama started when guitarist Daron Malakian said in an interview with Kerrang! That he had a new System album ready, but creative differences between him and Tankian were holding it back. Malakian later told聽 that the band members are 'not enemies' with each other, but they are still unable to agree on how to 'move forward' with new music.

Speaking with Rolling Stone, Tankian says what happened over the summer hasn't led to any developments on the new music front.聽 'I think it released a lot of tension and negativity,' he says. 'Everything became more public and open, and that was that.

There were no further discussions.' In an interview with published Wednesday, bassist Shavo Odadjian said he believes that new System music, including 'material that tops everything we've done,' would eventually be released.

Technically spotless, wildly eclectic, and out-outspokenly, er, Armenian, System of a Down’s 1998 self-titled debut turned more nu-metal on its ear; and with this darker and more streamlined follow-up, the band proved that it was more than just a novelty–though spastic lead single “Chop Suey” is still one of the most awesomely bizarre songs to ever get repeated play on the radio. • Wiederhorn, Jon (August 13, 2001).
